Juche

    Kim Il Sung University was founded as the first university in the DPRK on October 1, 1946 and it is located in Taesong District, Pyongyang city.

    It has the statues of President Kim Il Sung and Chairman Kim Jong Il. It serves as the parent body of the universities in the DPRK and the supreme centre of education and science. It trains hardcore national cadres who are equipped with the noble spirit and profound knowledge.

    Kim Il Sung University is associated with the care and guidance of the great men of Mt. Paektu.

    President Kim Il Sung inspected the university more than 100 times and gave instructions to it on over 900 occasions from the day when it was inaugurated till the last period of his life. Kim Jong Suk, the anti-Japanese heroine, also visited it 19 times and gave instructions on over 40 occasions.

    In his university days from September, 1960 to March, 1964 Kim Jong Il made not only the academic study but energetic ideological, theoretical and practical activities. After graduation, he frequently inspected the university and gave programmatic teachings to illuminate the road ahead of the university.

    Under the wise leadership of President Kim Il Sung and Chairman Kim Jong Il, Kim Il Sung University has rapidly improved in all aspects such as teaching staff, training scale, curriculum structure and material foundation.

    It is now the most prestigious institution of Juhce-oriented education, an important centre for training cadres for the nation, with 7 colleges and scores of schools, that deal with social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, agriculture and medicine, and research institutes and laboratories of different areas.

    Most of its teachers and researchers are those with high academic degrees or titles including academicians, professors and doctors famous at home and abroad, and they give high-level education to undergraduates, postgraduates and those enrolled in postdoctoral courses.

    The university forms a university town with a large floor space.

    Here are harmoniously arranged different buildings such as Building No.1, Building No.2, e-library, science library, nature museum, gymnasium, indoor swimming pool, publishing house, printing house, dormitory, dining room, facilities, hospital and sanatorium.

    

    E-library

    On the initiative of and under the careful guidance of Chairman Kim Jong Il the e-library was newly built on the site of the university’s original building, and opened on April 14, 2010.

    The e-library, equipped with a complete set of cutting-edge equipment of information technology including over 1 000 terminal computers, has 16 reading rooms, a computer education room, and an on-line lecture room, an academic exchange room, a seminar room, an auditorium, bibliographic hall and some technical service offices for the management of the library.

    

    Science Library

    

    Its predecessor opened on October 1, Juche 35 (1946) when the university was founded. The present one was opened in October 1970. It can give access to a great number of books as well as electronic literature on social and natural sciences, both in Korean and foreign languages.

    

    Nature Museum

    

    The Nature Museum aims at collection, preservation, research, display and education of the specimens of the country’s natural resources and, at the same time, serves as a base for the preservation of the natural resources, scientific research and social education and edification.

    It was established on April 15, 1976.

    It has on display over 10 000 specimens of plants and animals, minerals, rocks and fossil organisms of approximately 5 000 varieties, many of which are those gifted by President Kim Il Sung and Chairman Kim Jong Il.

    

    Gymnasium

    

    The gymnasium opened on June 21, 1989. It is multi-purpose stadium for physical education, games and training, art performances and film shows and various kinds of ceremonies of functions.

    It has courts for handball, tennis, basketball, volleyball and other ball games on the ground floor, a wrestling practice hall on the first floor and practice halls for boxing, rhythmic and heavy gymnastics on the second floor.

    It equipped with multifunctional sound facilities.

    It has served as a venue for 17 international games and 6 international conferences. It sponsors over 100 artistic and sporting events every year.

    Athletes of the university practice here and many of them have become world champions and Olympic or national aces in boxing, wrestling and other events.

    

    Indoor Swimming Pool

    

    It was built in 2009. It helps promote leisure activities and health of the university personnel and students.

    It has a swimming pool, a wading pool, bathrooms, a curative gymnastics room, a clinic and many other service rooms and a 900-seat spectators’ gallery.

    The university personnel and students can have a swim and a bath, do curative gymnastics and enjoy massage and other services there. It also serves as a venue for a swimming lesson for students and national swimming contests of different levels.

    Kim Il Sung University makes exchanges of visiting professors and experts with some universities in different countries including Beijing University in China, Moscow Romonosov National University in Russia and so on. It takes part in the international academic seminars. It strengthens several kinds of exchange and cooperation.

    Four international academic seminars were held in Kim Il Sung University. Since 1954 thousands of students and scholars from 31 countries such as China, Russia and so on have graduated from regular, Master and Doctor courses in Kim Il Sung University. Lots of teachers and researchers in Kim Il Sung University have practiced and acted as visiting professors in dozens of universities of different countries in the world.

    Over millions of foreigners from many countries in the world and compatriots overseas visited Kim Il Sung University.

    Kim Il Sung University is the most authoritative base which takes the lead in education and research work in the country and it plays the role as a centre for stimulating the development of all areas including politics, the economy, science, education and the press.

    Teachers and researchers of Kim Il Sung University are now striving to develop into a world-class one in education and scientific research, contributing to the building of a thriving nation.

    The university’s immediate goal is to reach the world’s A class in the near future in terms of faculty forces, quality of education, scientific research and teaching and research environment.

    The university is redoubling its efforts, keeping the feet firmly planted in Korea and looking out over the world, to fulfill its mission and role as a mother university in developing the country into an educational and intellectual power.
