Noble Intention Permeated in National Flag

One day in January 1948 President Kim Il Sung called in several officials to learn about the situation of designing the national flag.

The President stressed that instituting the national flag is very important state affair because it is of big significance in adding lustre to dignity and honour of the country which had eclipsed on the world map in the past and in adding national pride and self-confidence among the people.
He asked the officials to show him the design of the national flag.

Looking at the draft design for a good while, the President expressed satisfaction saying that selection of the national flag’s colour--red, white and blue--is good.
He explained the meaning of these colours; The red colour symbolizes the blood shed by the anti-Japanese forerunners and patriots of Korea and the invincible might of the Korean people who are firmly united behind the Republic; The white colour symbolizes that ours is homogeneous nation in which the people have lived honestly with one blood and single culture and language in the same land; The blue colour symbolically illustrates the lively features and spirit of the Korean people who are struggling for a new democratic society, world peace and progress.

The President said in detail that the red colour should be the grounding in the mid part of the flag, that the white and blue colors should be symmetrical on the upper and lower part, and that the width of the white and red colors should be narrower and made the colours more visible.

The officials were moved by his extraordinary wisdom.
The President asked again about the ratio of the colours and the width and length the flag and told to move the white circle towards the flagpole side rather than to put it on the center.

President Kim Il Sung said it would be nice to draw a five-point star in the white circle to descriptively show the tradition of the Republic, the sagacious spirit of the advancing Korean people and the development prospect of the country.

    The draft flag was completed.

Busy as he was with the building of the country, the President gave precious teachings on profound ideological content of the flag and ways for its description for the wonderful completion of the flag.
