Mausoleum of King Wanggon--World Cultural Heritage

It is a mausoleum of Wanggon (877-943), a founding king of Koryo Dynasty located in Haeson-ri, Kaesong.

President Kim Il Sung gave field guidance to the mausoleum of King Wanggon on May 5, 1992 to give instruction to refurbish the mausoleum as Wanggon was the king who built the first united state in Korea.

Chairman Kim Jong Il settled all the issues arising in the reconstruction of the mausoleum of King Wanggon, true to the high intention of President Kim Il Sung.

The mausoleum which was built first in 943 was successfully reconstructed in 1994 befitting the mausoleum of a founding king of Koryo demonstrating the national history, thanks to the leadership of the great leaders.

The newly reconstructed mausoleum is divided into 4 stages.

The 1st stage covers a heap of the tomb, stone handrail, stone tiger, the stone table and a stone pillar in front of the tomb.

There is a stone lantern at the center on the 2nd stage which is lower than the 1st stage and two images of stone men stand face to face on the right and the left of the stage. The images of stone men in the west are military officers and those in the east are civil officers and they are the depiction of the subjects loyal to Wanggon.

On the 3rd stage which is one stage lower than the 2nd one, there are also images of the stone men standing in the east and the west two by two and their composition and size are as same as those on the 2nd stage.

President Kim Il Sung’s hand writing in Chinese characters “Reconstruction Monument to the Tomb of King Wanggon, the Founding Father of Koryo,” a shrine for memorial service, a pavilion for a monument, a gate to the mausoleum and so on are on the 4th stage.

The mausoleum is a single-chamber earth-covered stone grave whose tomb chamber is semi subterranean. 4 walls of the chamber were built with well-carved plain granite and the plain ceiling is supported in a parallel way. Biers and relic-stand are on the floor of the chamber.

The walls have the murals of plants and pictures of 4 guardians, and an astronomical chart was drawn on the ceiling.

Relics including 2 jeweled band decorations, a cup of celadon inlaid with a pattern of chrysanthemum, gilt bronze ornament, brass kettle etc. were unearthed in the original chamber and other relics including a seated image depicting Wangon, a jeweled band and gilt bronze buckle were unearthed in the pits nearby the heap of the tomb.
