The Songun idea was created as the reflection of socio-historical conditions under which imperialists’ moves for military repression and aggression have been intensified to the maximum and the masses’ struggle for class and national liberation has been waged dynamically on the world-wide scale.
When the 20th century was ushered in, the imperialists’ moves for aggression and their fascist repression to oppress and exploit the masses of other counties and to dominate and subordinate other countries and nations have become more undisguised.
During this period the imperialists’ fascist repression was vicious to oppress and exploit the masses of the people and suppress the labor movement.
The “January 9 incident” of 1905 in Russia recorded as “Bloody Sunday” in history, the failure of the proletarian revolution of 1919 in Hungary and etc are no more than a part of products of merciless repressive policy of the imperialists against the working class and the rest of the masses.
During this period the imperialists further intensified their moves for war and aggression upon other countries and nations and increased their cruel plunder of the people in colonies.

A new era of history was approaching, in which the masses of the people whose independence had been trampled down for a long time rose up in a struggle for their class and national liberation and the revolutionary movement made progress in a broad and diversified way on a worldwide scale.
The requirement of the times for creation of the Songun idea was particularly urgent in Korea in which national liberation revolution presented itself as an immediate task.
The Korean people had to conduct struggle with national liberation revolution to free themselves from the Japanese colonial yoke as an immediate task, under the condition in which they were deprived of their country by the Japanese imperialism and faced with the lot of colonial slavery.
In order to successfully carry out national liberation revolution for overthrowing the colonial rule of Japanese imperialists who occupied Korea by force and trampled down sovereign rights of the Korean people mercilessly and regaining sovereignty of the nation, a correct revolutionary theory had to be needed illuminating the way of smashing counter-revolutionary forces of Japanese imperialism before anything else.
President Kim Il Sung, starting from these practical requirement of the Korean revolution, found the key to making a breakthrough in effecting a change in the national liberation struggle of Korea by armed forces of the revolution. So, he created the Songun idea on liberating Korea and advancing the revolution by means of armed forces.
