New Mural Tombs and Relics Dating Back to Koguryo Kingdom Unearthed

    New mural tombs and relics dating back to Koguryo Kingdom were recently unearthed in Wolji-ri, Anak County, South Hwanghae Province, DPRK.

    The Archaeological Institute under the Academy of Social Sciences made active efforts to unearth historic remains and in that process, excavated two Koguryo mural tombs and gold ornaments and checked their historical references.

    Unearthed in the said tombs were nine gold ornaments including delicately made gold earrings and petal-shaped ornaments.

    Pictures of four guardians, constellations, fantastic pictures painted in the mural paintings of the tombs and relics like gold earrings explain well about the level of astronomy, religious belief and developed techniques of metalwork of the people at that time.

    The Archaeology Society of the DPRK verified that the mural tombs unearthed in Wolji-ri, Anak County were constructed in the first half of the sixth century and examined and appraised their archaeological importance.
