One day, that is, several days before the 70th anniversary of victory in the Fatherland Liberation War, I was on the way to my office and saw some war veterans in the military uniforms, the same as the ones they had put on in the war period. They reminded me of my mother-in-law who passed away long ago. She was a war veteran, too. Greeting this year’s anniversary of victory in the war, I often thought of her. That day when I saw them walking along the street, I tried to find her among them. She always told me stories about the war time. Suddenly one of her stories came into my mind.
When the US imperialists provoked a war of aggression against the DPRK, my mother-in-law was a young girl who wore her hair in two pigtails. But she volunteered to join the Korean People’s Army and served as a nurse in a field hospital of the army.
She said that she had performed no special feats to be proud of during the war, but she carried patients for shelter at all hours when the Yankee planes dropped bombs on the hospital and dedicated much of her blood for recovery of the critically ill patients.
Listening to her, I asked. “What made you do that in the war time? Did you think that the war would be victorious?”
Frankly speaking, she was so kind-hearted and honest that I regarded her as my own mother rather than a war veteran. I wanted the then thought from her.
She said in a normal voice but full of confidence.
“At that time, I had only one thought that we can win victory in the war as long as we have General
I suddenly felt a big shock. Her words which I heard usually from TVs and radios and I read from ordinary books gave me a fresh meaning. I have never been in a war, so I have an understanding of the war only through films or books. I have never experienced a hard time, but lived a happy life. From then on I always have kept her words deep in mind as an unforgettable memory.
She said it in a flat voice, but her words are precious to the rising generation.
She still says to us posterities.
