The West Sea Barrage was constructed by building a 20-ri dam across the wide sea off Nampho on the lower River Taedong under the wise leadership of leader Kim Jong Il, upholding President Kim Il Sung’s grand natural remaking plan.
The construction of the West Sea Barrage was the one of the largest scale unprecedented in the world history of barrage construction that had to build a dam on a rough sea.
The service personnel of the People’s Army and builders, scientists and technicians in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea introduced new method of construction to remove more than 15 million cubic metres of earth, thraw in more than 2 million cubic metres of concrete, exploit and convey more than 16 million cubic metres of stones and aggregate and thus they created a worldwide miracle of completing such difficult and huge construction of a giant barrage with 3 lock chambers and scores of lock gates in a short period of only 5 years.
A ceremony for the completion of the West Sea Barrage was held in splendor on June 24, 1986.
Thanks to the construction of the West Sea Barrage, a giant man-made lake came into being on the lower River Taedong and the problems of irrigation water, industrial water and drinking water including the water in tideland in the lower reaches of the River Taedong were solved satisfactorily. And any drought and flood damage could be prevented. And the depths of the River Taedong and River Jaeryong got deeper and railway and motorway were built on the barrage so as to open up a new prospect in developing communication and transport in the western seaside and change the scenic beauty along the River Taedong to be more beautiful.
