Socialism demands to build and develop the multilateral and modern economy which can satisfy fully the daily increasing material and cultural needs of the entire members of society. If this demand is to be realized, socialist economy must inevitably have a strong heavy industry base whose nucleus is machine-building industry, a modern light industry base which can fully satisfy one’s people’s needs for consumer goods and a developed rural economy which can provide national economy with raw materials and people with food by oneself. Without material and technical foundation for socialism equipped with the above-mentioned bases, it is impossible to say that they have built socialism and improve welfare of the working people comprehensively and continuously in conformity with demands of the socialist basic economic law. Such material and technical foundation for socialism should be built as every national state as a unit as long as there are national differences and boundaries.
The Workers’ Party of Korea’s line of building an independent national economy is the scientific economic construction line which clarified the correct road of laying a firm material and technical foundation befitting a socialist society with a national state as a unit.
The Korean people have built the independent national economy on the revolutionary principle of self-reliance. As a result they could have strong heavy industry, developed light industry and modern agriculture that are not moved by any economic blockade of imperialists and the world economic upheavals but run by one’s own raw materials, technique and national cadres, developed in a many-sided manner and equipped with up-to-date technology.
Solid basis has been laid also in the field of foreign relations, so that they could successfully implement both national duty and international duty at the same time on the basis of equality and independence. The line of building an independent national economy which clarifies the way of supporting by oneself in any circumstance is the economic construction line of the WPK to be held consistently during the whole period of socialist construction.
