Mt. Ryongak located between Ryongaksan-dong, Ryongsan-dong and Ryonbong-ri, Mangyongdae District, Pyongyagng City is well known as “Mt. Kumgang in Pyonyang”, a mountain with very beautiful scenery as it has the peculiar peaks soaring high into the sky and all things including all kinds of flowers, thick forest, and red maple in autumn forming the mysterious harmony.
The name of the mountain was derived from the fact that the mountain peak assumes a curious appearance of a “dragon” that is about to fly up to the sky.
Over 600 kinds of plants grow in the mountain. Most of its forests are a pine trees or a mixed forest with pine and oak trees.
In Mt. Ryongak, Ryongaksan zelkova, Ryongaksan red oaks and Ryongaksan Styphnolobium japonicum are specially protected and tended as the natural monument in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
It has distinguished scenery with a beautiful bird’s-eye view of Pyongyang and an affluent rural area.
There are the modern Mangyongdae Schoolchildren’s Camp at the foot of the mountain and historic relics including “Popunam Temple,” one of the oldest temples in Korea.
Mt. Ryongak is associated with the glorious revolutionary history of President Kim Il Sung and Chairman Kim Jong Il.
The President, who dedicated his whole life to provide the people with more affluent life conditions, climbed the mountain on several occasions and requested to build roads and service facilities so that the working people can relax and mountaineer.
In January 2009, Kim Jong Il left his trace of love and dedication in spite of bitter cold to refurbish the mountain into the one for the people.
Sightseeing paths were built up to the top of the mountain and all conditions for making the people enjoy their recreation to their hearts’ content superbly equipped, thanks to the great affection of the President and the Chairman.
Mt. Ryongak that covers great traces of love left by the great leaders who dedicated their all while crossing mountain ranges on cold days for the sake of the happiness of the younger generations and the people became as the people’s mountain.
