Tug of War--Folk Game for Unity and Concord

Tug of war is a folk game of the Korean people that enables the people to harden their body and mind and achieve unity and concord by cultivating collective spirit.

It is the group game in which many peoples in two teams compete by the method of pulling the other team at the both sides of a long rope.

Historically, it has been the most popular folk game among the Korean people. It has been played with splendor in different parts of the country on the occasion of folk festivals including Jongwoldaeborum and the scene of the game was something.

Originally, the game was played between the villages and each village had to prepare a heavy rope twisted thickly with rice straws or arrowroots on which many small ropes were tied with the distance of about 1 meter. All the villagers pooled their strength and wisdom as it is a labour-consuming work to make such rope.

The game was played after linking the ropes prepared by two villages. A team in which strength, breathing and posture are not in accord and the mental strength is not strong lost in the game. When the game reached the climax, even the spectators burst into the playground to cheer their team.

Like this, tug of war is associated with an excellent tradition and disposition of the Korean people strong in unity.

Today, it is actively encouraged by the wise policy of the Workers’ Party of Korea that inherits and develops the folk tradition.

The game of tug of war is played conspicuously in the sports games and contests including the inter-provincial mass sports contests. And the institutions, factories and the enterprises play the game, demonstrating the unity of collective on the days of sports and the important occasions.
