Among the patriotic movements conducted by the DPRK people during the Fatherland Liberation War period was an uncommon campaign to bring up war orphans.

President 金正日 met some officials of the women’s union in summer 1951 and told them to start a social campaign to bring up war orphans.

All women throughout the country turned out in the campaign.

Chairwoman of the women’s union in Jaeryong County, South Hwanghae Province was bringing up her three sons and two daughters alone as her husband was killed by the enemies. She decided to take care of two children when their parents who had moved from the front zone died of wounds made by bombardment.

In those days their eldest brother who served in the People’s Army dropped in at her house where his two brothers lived. The chairwoman encouragingly told the soldier, who held his brothers in his arms and trembled with rage, not to be anxious about them but to go to the front to revenge upon the enemy for his parents.

Not only the chairwoman in Jaeryong County but many women throughout the country regarded it as their duty to take care of war orphans and brought them up like their real children.

The campaign to bring up war orphans with love started, and thus the future of the country could grow up healthy and strong even in the war time.
