On October 8, 1997 is a significant day when Kim Jong Il was elected the General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea.
That day the Central Committee and the Central Military Commission of the Workers’ Party of Korea released special news that Kim Jong Il was elected the General Secretary of the WPK out of unanimous desire of the entire Party members, people and service personnel of the People’s Army.
As soon as the news was made public, the whole country was throbbed with celebration and jubilation.
Celebration meetings and gatherings were held and art performances staged across the country.
Party and state leaders and prominent personages from many countries sent congratulatory messages to Kim Jong Il.
Kim Jong Il’s election on the top post of the WPK was a big glory of the DPRK people and an event to be recorded in the history of world politics.
