Flaminio Piccoli, the former chairman of the International Christian Democratic Party and the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian parliament visited the DPRK in November 1989. At that time, abnormal events took place in Eastern Europe. Socialism was collapsed in Hungary which had joined the USSR-led CMEA.
Pikoli was anxious to know President Kim Il Sung’s view on several international problems including the abnormal situation in the Eastern European countries. The President said that the Eastern European countries suffered from pains as they were not independent.
The President continued to say… We predicted the future of those countries which joined the CMEA, 25 or 30 years ago. So we did not join the CMEA. If a country follows big countries, it will meet miserable result.
Pikoli was surprised.
The President had already made a diagnosis scores of years ago of the future of those countries which joined the CMEA.
