In 2004 a Pakistani newspaper carried an article entitled “Today’s DPRK and Statesman of General Type”. The article noted as follows.

In a word, the present times requires to carve out the destiny of a country and people in an independent way on the principle of giving precedence to the military affairs, taking the army in hand. Such task of an age can be settled only by a statesman of general type who is well versed in the military affairs and capable of organically combining the military affairs and politics.

The statesman representing such demand of an age is none other than Chairman Kim Jong Il of the National Defence Commission.

Prominent disposition and traits of Chairman Kim Jong Il as a statesman of general type is inconceivable apart from his unusual course of growth and national disposition. Indeed, it is the biggest fortune for the DPRK people that they have such statesman of general type, who is one and only in the world, as a state leader.
