In the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the universal educational organs are divided into kindergarten for one year preschool education, primary school for 5-year elementary education, junior middle school for 3-year lower stage of secondary education, senior middle school for 3-year higher stage of secondary education, school for the blind, dumb and deaf school for education of those with disabilities, school for education of specific persons and middle school No.1 for talented ones.
Local people’s committees and relevant organs rationally dispose schools for universal education in consideration of the number of students and their conditions of transportation and schools are preferentially built by local people’s committees and relevant organs.
It is the principle to run primary schools, junior middle schools and senior middle schools independently. But they can be run in common or individual branch school can be built, under the approval of the central education guidance organ by considering the number of students and the distance of transportation.
The central education guidance organ and local people’s committees build middle school No.1 in Pyongyang and provinces and give education to the students who are talented. The criterion to select such students is decided by the central education guidance organ on the principle of giving stress on their ability. Local people’s committees and relevant organs fully provide the students with boarding conditions.
The universal education organ regulates and standardizes educational administration, establishes educational environment as required by the pedagogical demand and sees that school buildings, districts and facilities are kept clean and tidy. Relevant organs, enterprises and organizations regularly repair school buildings, laboratories and fields for practice.
The DPRK is now making active efforts to fully provide all primary schools, junior middle schools and senior middle schools with conditions and environments on the highest level in line with the demand of the IT era and pedagogy.
