    Pyongyang Bell is in Taedongmun-dong, Central District, Pyongyang City in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

    Originally, it had been hung in the gatehouse of Taedong Gate but moved in 1714 to the northern general’s terrace with the reconstruction of the northern castle of the Walled City of Pyongyang. There was a fire in the terrace to break the bell. In 1726, a bell was made by casting bronze for about 4 months and it is the Pyongyang bell.

    The Pyongyang Bell is 3.1meters in height and its mouth is 1.6 meters. The bell is engraved with different patterns and words proving its history. In particular, well-balanced shape and the sculpture of dragon embellishments on the head of the bell arouse the admiration for the wisdom and talents of the audacious and delicate Korean people.

    The Pyongyang Bell used to be rung to inform the time and an alarm till the 1890s.

    It was informed that the bell was rung regardless of frequency to give an alarm for the invasion of foreign aggressors, and the sound of the bell evoked hatred of the people against the enemy and made them turn out as one in the fight for defend the country.

    President Kim Il Sung who had always paid deep attention to the succession of the national cultural heritage, saw to it that the Pyongyang Bell was rung in morning of New Year’s Day greeted for the first time after the liberation of the country so as to arouse all the people in the country to the building of a new democratic Korea.

    Even today, the Pyongyang Bell is being preserved as it is to convey noble love of President Kim Il Sung for people.
