Chilsong Gate is the northern gate of the keep of the Walled City of Pyongyang, Koguryo, situated in Kyongsang-dong, Central District, Pyongyang City, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
As it is named after the Great Bear, Chilsong Gate means a gate on the northern side. It was constructed first in the mid-6th century when Koguryo built the Walled City of Pyongyang. The present gatehouse was rebuilt in 1712.
Chilsong Gate has a strong defence power for its mysterious structure.
Hundreds of thousands-strong Kitan aggressors, invaded in 1010, got a heavy blow at Chilsong Gate. In the battle for recapturing the Walled City of Pyongyang in January 1593, the Imjin Patriotic War period, the volunteers and people rushed through the Chilsong Gate to defeat over ten thousand Japanese invaders entrenched in Kyongsanggol and Ryongwang Pavilion, thus wining a brilliant victory. That is why the people have called Chilsong Gate “a gate of victory” from long time ago.
