Taesongsan Fort is located on Mt. Taesong in Taesong District, Pyongyang, capital of the DPRK.
It was built in the 3rd-5th century. It is one of large forts in Koguryo.
Taesongsan Fort is 7 076 metres round and 9 284 metres long.
It links 6 peaks and has two wide and deep valleys centring on Ulji Peak which is 274 metres high.
Old sites of food store, armoury and barrack, general’s terrace, gate and ponds were found in the fort.
Taesongsan Fort was built by making good use of natural and geographical conditions.
Rugged mountains lie range after range on the north of the fort. There are steep slopes on the east and the west. Castles were built one upon another on the valley leading to Taedong River on the valley of the south facing the Taedong River. It was favourable fort which was hard for the enemy to attack and easy for Koguryo to defend.
Square-pyramidal stones were piled one-sidedly on the peaks, two-sidedly on the places where they crossed valleys, and in a two- and three-folded manner on important spots.
As it was abundant in water resource and equipped with excellent defence facilities, it served as a reliable fort in the fight against foreign aggressors.
