    The Korean people who created and developed Taedonggang Culture, one of the World Five Major Civilizations, in early years have ushered in a heyday of building a socialist culture under the wise leadership of the Workers’ Party of Korea and made strenuous efforts to add luster to the people-centered socialist country as a civilized one.

    It is a patriotic will of leader Kim Jong Il and the unanimous aspiration the Korean people to surpass the standard of the world civilization in all spheres of social life.

    The joint editorial referred to the major problems in surpassing the world civilization standard at present in the DPRK.

    It stated that the sector of education should ensure a high level of its contents and forms conditions and environments as required by the era of knowledge-based economy.

    Today many universities in the DPRK including Kim Il Sung University and Kim Chaek University of Technology select the items and detailed indices with which they can be able to win the world mastery, the level to be attained and the objects of competition and draw up the prospective target and concrete plans according to stages.

    Works to put the contents and forms, resources and environments of education on an information basis are being propelled dynamically in every educational unit in the DPRK.

    It is an intention of the WPK to bring about radical development of education as required by the era of knowledge-based economy as well as a thoroughgoing embodiment of the principle of the socialist pedagogy.

    The joint editorial also presented the major tasks in the sector of literature and art.

    Last year, monumental works of performing arts, like the drama, We Will Recollect Today, which represents the art and literature in the Songun era, have been created one after another, and a new golden age of the mass-based arts has been ushered in.

    Today it requires that the sector of literature and art should thoroughly implement the WPK’s policy of creating, editing and representing in their own way and produce a larger number of masterpieces that are perfect in all respects. It stressed that activities of mass-based art, easy to understand and based on the reality of a great upsurge, should be conducted briskly and more affluent cultured and emotional life be better provided.

    The joint editorial stressed that the heated enthusiasm for sports should be encouraged further by enhancing social interest in physical culture and sports and making them part of the people’s every day life and habit.

    Excellent achievements have been made in several sports events including women’s football, Taekwon-do, weight-lifting and wrestling in recent years and the mass activities for physical culture are being under way more actively among the working people with the defence sports as a main. It raised it as the major requirement for the building of a civilized, socialist country in Korea to resolutely prepare the entire people for labour and defence by further encouraging the heated enthusiasm for sports and win the world championship in the sector of sports.

    The joint editorial also stated that the most excellent culture, ethics and way of life of the Korean nation should be brought into full bloom.

    Today the imperialists and reactionaries are moving desperately to tarnish the excellent culture and ethics of the Korean nation and its way of life and infuse their view on value and way of life.

    It is unable to build a civilized, socialist country, add luster to it and defend socialism unless imperialists’ moves are frustrated. That is why the DPRK stresses to wage an intense struggle to frustrate the imperialist manoeuvres of ideological and cultural infiltration and root out alien elements in the way of life, so that a revolutionary and sound atmosphere can pervade in the whole society.

    The joint editorial stressed to press ahead the work of improving the appearance of the country.

    To improve the appearance of Pyongyang is an important project to greet splendidly the centenary of the birth of President Kim Il Sung and the earnest behest of Kim Jong Il.

    It stressed to step up the construction in the Mansudae area and other major projects under construction on the highest level and effect a radical turn in urban management and landscaping.

    It is raised as a major requirement to improve the appearance of the country that every province, city and county should sustain its local peculiarities in its designing and construction, and drastically improve the appearance of its urban and rural communities.

    Under the wise leadership of the WPK the DPRK will surely build a civilized, socialist country where the people’s ideal is translated into reality.
