Lake Chon on Mt Paektu is a pride of the DPRK and a scenic spot of the world.
The lake has been well-known for long in the world as it is encircled with majestic and magnificent peaks, as it is wide and deep, mysterious, elegant and beautiful and as it makes kaleidoscopic changes.
The lake has a vast amount of water which is limpid.
Surrounding peaks and the sky are reflected on the limpid water of Lake Chon making a mysterious look. Its water is very good in a hygienic view.
An aerial cableway and stone stairway have been finely built under the benevolence of the WPK, so that many visitors can climb down the lake and drink its water enjoying scenic beauty of the lake.
Scenery of the lake in winter is spectacular, which can be seen only on Mt Paektu.
It starts freezing from late September. It is frozen hard in early December. Thick ice lay on the shore of the lake. In addition to it, all kinds of frozen forms and figures are made by sprays and frozen waterfall and icicles hang on the cliffs and neighboring shore of the lake forming a natural ice museum.
Ice of the lake starts to melt in mid-May and melts away in mid-June or in the end of June in some years.
When ice melts, it makes mysterious sounds as if one played a string of musical instrument.
The ice melts away, and the limpid water of the lake starts doing wonders again.
