Mt. Kuwol—Famous Mountain with Scenic Beauty

    Mt. Kuwol is a scenic spot which is located in the north west of South Hwanghae Province. Mt. Kuwol stands high with Peak Sahwang as its highest peak which is 954 metres high and several other peaks around it. So it looks very high and splendid. It is said that it was named “Mt. Kuwol(meaning September)” in olden times as it had beautiful scenes in September when it turned red.

    Mt. Kuwol consists of queer rocks, cliffs, conical and pyramidal peaks and ravines formed by weathering and erosion for a long time. Ravines of Sansong, Obong, Hwajang and Wonmyong have rainbow-bright Ryongyon Fall, Samhyongje Fall and other falls and pools where clear water flows down.

    Mt. Kuwol is densely covered with dozens of species of trees such as pine tree, oak tree, chestnut tree and maple tree. At the foot of the mountain many kinds of flowers are in bloom. In autumn chestnut, jujube, persimmon and other fruit become ripe. Mt. Kuwol is a nature preservation area as it is rich in botanical resources.

    Mt. Kuwol had the Phaeyob Temple which was said to be built at the beginning of the 9th century, the Raksan Temple, Talma Temple, Jonggok Temple, Sinwon Temple, Kyogak Temple and other several old buildings. Only the Woljong Temple is still on it.

    The Phaeyob Temple was totally destroyed by the barbarian bombing of the US imperialists in the Korean War.

    Mt. Kuwol is a famous mountain with scenic beauty of nature; flowers are in full bloom in spring, green foliage covered in summer, trees turn red in autumn and beautiful and naïve frostwork is formed in winter.

    At the foot of Mt. Kuwol are there the Talchon Hot Spring, which is well-known for much gush and good medical properties, Sin Hot Spring, Un Hot Spring, Songhwa Hot Spring and other many hot springs. Rest centers and sanatoriums are built here, which add to its value as a scenic spot.
