World Cultural Heritage—Sungyang Private School

    Sungyang Private School is a private educational institution situated in Sonjuk-dong, in Kaesong City.

     This building was built in 1573 on the site of house of Jong Mong Ju, who was famous for remaining loyal to the Koryo Dynasty. Once being called as Munchung Shrine after his pen name, it has been named Sungyang Private School since 1575.

     Entering the outer gate of the school surrounded by high rectangle-style fence, you can see the east building and west building on the right and left in the yard. Stepping ahead on the three-stage stairs will bring you to high embankment on which the lecture hall stands. Climbing three stages behind the lecture hall, you will reach the shrine, the main building of the school.

     The both of the east and west buildings, the then dormitories for students are garble-roofed, being the large ones with 5 bays in the front part and 2 bays in the side.

     The great leader Comrade Kim Jong Il, learning in details the states of the old buildings in Kaesong City in August 1987, ensured that the Sungyang Private School should be repaired to original form for the tourists .

     The Sungyang Private School is one of the famous relics which tells the local education situation and the architectural style of the school during the feudal Joson Dynasty, being associated with the legend related with Jong Mong Ju.
