Group of Myong Mausoleums-World Cultural Heritage

    Group of Myong Mausoleums is located in Haeson-ri, Kaesong.

    It is consisted of the Myong Mausoleum, a tomb of Koryo’s 29th King Hyonhyo, and two tombs around it. Unknown are the heroes of these two tombs.

    King Hyonhyo died at the age of 12, 4 years after he took the power at the age of 8. The mausoleum was built to lay him one year after his death.

    In view of building form, mausoleums No. 2 and No. 3 were built in the middle of the 14th century, almost the same period when the Myong Mausoleum was built.

    The group lies at the foot of a mountain which is 1km away to the west from the King Wangon’s Mausoleum. Myong Mausoleum locates at the very west and the mausoleums No. 2 and No. 3 lie at the interval of approximately 40 meters towards the east.

    The Myong Mausoleum was unearthed in 1983.

    According to the result of unearthing it, it has a single chamber with a flat ceiling, there are remains of mural painting on the chamber wall which is made of one plain rock, and some of painted stars remain on the ceiling.

    Exterior arrangements of the three tombs are almost similar to those of king mausoleums in Koryo.

    The Group of Myong Mausoleums shows the installation of stone buildings erected for king mausoleum and the changes of their chamber structures.
