Group of 7 Tombs--World Cultural Heritage

    The group of 7 tombs that was registered as the world cultural heritage at the 37th session of the World Heritage Committee of the UNESCO is located in Haeson-ri, Kaesong City.

    The tombs are laid in line in the west and the east on different ridges on the range of mountains running south from the main peak of Mt. Mansu and they are called Tombs No.1, 2, 3 and so on from the west to the east.

    Tomb No. 1 was the one built in the 12th-13th centuries and the others 6 ones are considered to be built in the end of the late 13th century and 14th century.

    They have one chamber made of stones with plastered flat ceiling. On the ceiling of the Tomb No.7 is a charter of stars.

    The tombs are round and their bases are enclosed with stones in 12 angles and the stone parapets and animals are arranged outer of them. Structures including stone image, offertory table, stone lantern and the pairs of stone post are arranged in front of some tombs.

    Unclear is the heroes of the tombs but the architectural form of the tombs tell that they belong to the royal family in Koryo dynasty.

    The group of 7 tombs built in the period of Koryo dynasty is significant as they tell the changing process of design of mausoleum.
