Silent Commendation

Mother Kim Jong Suk, the anti-Japanese heroine who participated in the anti-Japanese war in the early years of her teens conducted seasoned and skillful military and political activities with outstanding stratagem and marksmanship worthy of a crack shot, bravery and spirit of self-sacrifice to perform the distinguished combat feats in big and small battles of over hundreds of rounds for more than 10 years.

During the days of the anti-Japanese revolution the guerillas and people highly praised Kim Jong Suk as “the woman general of Mt. Paektu”, “the anti-Japanese heroine”.

Kim Jong Suk already attracted the admiration of the people with the outstanding marksmanship when she was in charge of the work of the Children’s Corps.

The following story happened when she visited the anti-Japanese unit led by Xu Kui-wu with the art troupe of the Children’s Corps one day in July, Juche 22 (1933).

The soldiers of the unit clapped their hands and shed tears, watching the performance of the art troupe. The performance was very effective.

After the performance the soldiers told the members of the Children’s Corps to say anything that they needed.

At first the members said they needed nothing, and they told to shoot a rifle.

Xu Kui-wu who was satisfied at the performance permitted them to shoot with live bullets.

The soldiers set a target on a lonely tree 100 m away.

The members of the Children’s Corps went to the emplacement in turn.

Kim Jong Suk told them to hit the target, thinking it was not a tree, but the Japs that had killed their fathers and mothers.

Most of them hit the target.

The soldiers said that they were wonderful and told her to shoot.

Kim Jong Suk did not particularly level her gun, but shot in succession.

A targeteer who was a soldier of the anti-Japanese unit pointed to the centre of the target.

Her bullets were shot through the centre, not anywhere of the target.

The soldiers of the unit gave applause to her with cheers.

Xu Kui-wu who sat on the chair behind the emplacement to watch the shooting clapped with a hearty laugh when she shot all the bullets at the centre.

Xu Kui-wu seldom laughed nor clapped, and this was his silent commendation for her.
