The West Sea Barrage is a world hydraulic structure constructed by the DPRK people by damming the 8 km-vast sea in a short period of 5 years under the wise leadership of the Workers’ Party of Korea.
The barrage was completed in June 1986.
With the construction of the West Sea Barrage, a large artificial lake came into being on the lower Taedong River, the problems of water for irrigation and industrial and drinking water in the tidelands and the areas in the lower part of Taedong River could be settled and damages by drought and flood prevented. The Taedong River and the Jaeryong River got deeper, railway, motorway and pavement were built on the dam of the barrage, thus opening a new vista in the development of transport and changing sceneries on the bank of the Taedong River into more beautiful ones.
The barrage has 3 lock gates and dams, 36 sluices and a combined control room. There is a monument erected in commemoration of its construction.
