The Chollima Statue stands on Mansu Hill, Pyongyang.
The Chollima Statue erected in 1961 is composed of a white gray granite stand and a bronze sculpture which depicts a worker, who holds up the “Red Letter” of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, and a woman peasant, who takes a sheaf of rice in her arms, riding on Chollima which unfolding its wings to fly high and rushing forward like the wind.
Depicting a worker and a peasant on winged Chollima, a legendary horse which symbolizes considerably fast speed, shows the solemn realities in which the DPRK people are united politically and ideologically on the basis of the Juche idea and performing epochal-making changes and the images typical to the Chollima riders who are growing up into heroes of the era in such realities.
The Chollima Statue reflects the unanimous aspiration and ardent revolutionary zeal to build socialism as soon as possible under the wise leadership of President Kim Il Sung. Content of its ideological theme is the Chollima Movement.
Chairman Kim Jong Il said.
“The heroic fighting spirit displayed in effecting the Chollima upsurge in the circumstances of war devastation always serves as an example for our people to follow in building socialism.”
The Chollima Movement that brought about a great leap forward in the DPRK’s socialist construction started with the historic December 1956 Plenary Meeting as an occasion.
Cherishing a steadfast resolution and will to tide over prevailing severe difficulties by believing in and relying on the people’s strength, the President went to the Kangson Steel Plant in December 1956.
Informing the workers in the plant of the difficult situation of the country one by one, the President said… We have no one but you, the workers to believe in; if you produce 10 000 tons of steel more than planned, things will improve in the country. We entirely leave the production of steel to you.
The President’s big trust in the workers in the plant was a powerful encouragement that enabled them to smash passivism, conservatism and mysticism about technique and first effected the Chollima upsurge and a source of powerful strength that enabled the working class and the people throughout the country to turn out to create great miracles and innovations in all fronts of socialist construction through the revolutionary upsurge.
The DPRK people took ten steps and a hundred steps while others were taking one, true to the President’s militant call “Advance at the speed of Chollima!”, and made continued innovation and steady advance while smashing passivism, conservatism and mysticism about technique.
In the days of the Chollima upsurge, innovations were brought about every day in all fronts of the socialist construction and miracles created one after another startling the world people.
They produced 120 000 tons of steel from a blooming mill with the rated capacity of 60 000 tons and 270 000 tons of pig iron from the 190 000-ton capacity furnace, completed in a matter of two months and a half the building of the broad-gauge railway, which others said that it would take 3-4 years, and constructed 20 839 dwelling houses with materials, funds and manpower for 7 000 dwelling houses.
In that period the working class in the DPRK created a miracle of having produced Chollima tractor in a mere 30 days and Sungni 58-type truck for 40 days. They produced a modern 8-metre turning lathe which, others said, would take 2-3 years even in a developed industrial country, in a mere 5 months and manufactured an electronic locomotive, which is called “the peak of the machine-building industry”, for one year.
With self-reliance, they produced crane, excavator, bulldozer and large-size machine tools with their own technology and strength in a short span of time and manufactured in a year over 13 000 machine tools more than the state plan through the let-one-machine-tool-make-another movement.
Amidst the Chollima upsurge, the Korean people overfulfilled the Five-Year Plan in only two years and a half in terms of total industrial output value and in four years in terms of production indices. Every year they increased the total industrial output value at a miraculous speed of 36.6% on an average in the period from 1957 to 1969. In the 1957-1970 period of industrialization, they developed industrial production by an annual average of 19.1%.
As a result, they successfully accomplished in a short period of 14 years the difficult and huge task of industrialization which took a century or several centuries for the capitalist countries.
In those days, the legendary Chollima became the revolutionary Chollima and the Korean people fully demonstrated heroic mettle of “the land of Chollima” and “Chollima Korea” while giving the rein to the Chollima.
