    1 000-ri wall of Koryo is built in the area of total one thousand several hundred-ri from the mouth of the Amnok River to the shore of the East Sea of Korea in South Hamgyong Province in order to check the invasion of foreign aggressors in the period of Koryo.

    The Kitan and Jurchen races located in the northern region frequently invaded the northern border area threatening the security of Koryo.

    Koryo built a large-scale wall to cope with such situation.

    It was built between 1033 and 1044.

    Most of the wall was built with stones and some parts with earth. Height of the wall at present is 4-7 meters and width of its upper part is 2-5 meters. The wall was built by dividing it into several parts. Forts were built at important places for defence and two-fold ones were built at necessary places according to directions to strengthen defence.

    Several hundred-ri long Taeryonggang Wall, linked with the 1 000-ri wall of Koryo along the Taeryong River basin, was verified in the 1980s.

    These walls show patriotism and high building technique of the people who made devotion for defence of the country.
