Way to Penetrate Depths of People’s Hearts

In 1934 when it was making the first expedition into the North Manchuria in presence of President Kim Il Sung, the Korean People’s Revolutionary Army met an unexpected case in Ningan.

As the people in Ningan shut their doors and watched every move of the members of the KPRA cautiously, so the latter had to prepare their meals and sleep in the open for a good while.

That the Ningan people turned their backs on the KPRA because of misunderstanding and distrust was the result brought by the anti-communist propaganda campaign of the vicious Japanese imperialists. The political work teams that had been sent to the Ningan people several times were treated coldly and, in the long run, the undertaking to transform the overall North Manchurian area in a revolutionary way was placed at the crossroad of success or failure.

The political work teams had clearly conducted a stirring anti-Japanese propaganda campaign but they couldn’t win them as they failed to go deep among the people and tried blindly to teach them. It was an urgent and difficult problem to open the people’s hearts and go deep among them.

Acquainting himself in detail with such situation, Kim Il Sung made up his mind to change the form of political work and saw that the mouthorgan concert group was formed to be sent to the village.

First, the group played such light songs as The Children’s Song to make one or two boys gather and, in the long run, played Arirang to attract hundreds of the villagers. And the mouth-dexterities and humours were put on stage in succession to make the spectators laugh themselves into convulsions, until the tears came running down. Then the members of the political work group of the “mouthorgan concert group” conducted propaganda and agitation including the anti-Japanese propaganda and call for assisting the KPRA.

Like this, it was the mouthorgan concert group that opened the hearts of the Ningan people.

Later, Kim Il Sung wrote in his reminiscence that there might be many ways for us to penetrate the depths of people’s hearts, but their hearts would accept only sincerity, and only sincerity could fuse our blood and their blood as in one artery.
