It was in October 1979 when the construction of Changgwang Street began.
Leader Kim Jong Il gave detailed instructions to the officials concerned ranging from a miniature of the street to the forms and number of floors of its dwelling houses. Saying that the Korean people have beautiful manners of respecting the aged people and taking every possible care of parents from the old times, he told them that it is necessary to preserve such manners and arrange rooms for aged people particularly in new dwelling houses.
He stressed that rooms not only for aged people but for householders and children should be arranged and all rooms should be designed to be large and distinctive.
After a while, he said that ondol of all living rooms should be ensured by hot-water heating system. He explained in detail that heating pipes installed densely on one side and thinly on the other side so that aged women and baby mothers who like warmth can have a sleep on the warmer part and those who like the cool can have a sleep on the less warm part, thus making everyone can choose a place for sleep as desired.
Thanks to leader Kim Jong Il’s benevolent measure, many multistoried dwelling houses with 3 to 4 rooms for the aged, householders and children were arranged not only in Changgwang Street but in other new streets.
